My earliest memory…?
I came across some data a while back that suggested that is you ask someone to identify the very earliest memory they can recall, 5% refer to an early trip to the zoo (incidentally if you broaden that out to any kind of animal reference, toys, pets, wildife, picture, the statistic is 50%).
This really brings home what a seminal moment, an explosion of experience and excitement the first zoo visit must be. I suspect that our children’s brains are actually hard wired to soak up an awareness of animals, so it is not surprising that sudden exposure to a host of that what must seem quite bizarre life forms imprints itself so deeply.
